About
Hi! My name is Jerry and I am the Scoutmaster of Troop 664 in Gresham, OR.
A while back someone told me to write stuff down, to share my Scouting experience with other people. And so I created a blog. You can read it here.
That blog lead to some folks asking me to try my hand at podcasting, and that is where this site came from.
I suppose to let you know a bit about me, I have been in Scouting nearly all my life. I had the best opportunities to be a Scout as a youth in the Transatlantic Council while we lived in Holland. It was Scouting like you can not imagine. Later we
moved to Louisiana were Scouting took a sharp turn to an adventure in Backpacking. This led to a life long love of Backpacking and the rest as they say is History.
One day, my oldest Son brought home a flyer to join Cub Scouts and our Scouting life started up again. I have been an adult leader since then.
I have enjoyed serving as a Den leader, Cubmaster, and now the most rewarding position of all, Scoutmaster.

Interesting thoughts on guns there Jerry.
It sounds like the rules regarding guns and the like are fairly similar between the SA and BSA. Although we can go and play laser tag, we can’t do paint balling.
If using air weapons or actual firearms, they must be properly supervised and on a proper range or shooting area. The instructors must be properly qualified to the relevant standards laid out by the SA. Also we cannot shoot at targets which resemble an animal or person.
I agree with the current set up in the UK, with maybe the exception of paint balling. I guess the use of guns of all types comes down to the local culture. In my eyes (please correct me if I’m wrong), guns are seen as a more ‘normal’ thing in society in the US, than in the UK.
I must admit, seeing Police wearing guns in both the US and Canada when I have visited, did scare me. But that’s because that is not the case here and I see it as unusual.
I’m all for letting Scouts shoot in properly supervised conditions as this teaches them to treat a firearm with respect.
In my Scouting career I’ve shot air pistols, air rifles, rifles and done archery and it was good fun, although I have the utmost respect for these weapons!
Perhaps the issue is not about what the scouts can shoot and where, but the availability of the weapons. But that’s another story!
Keep up the good work with the fascinating podcasts.

That is an interesting outlook in the cultural aspect. I think because Scouting teaches the reponsible operation of firearms it would be hypocritical of them to then allow games that would require scouts to point firearms at each other.
