Jerry,

I am really enjoying your podcasts! Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences - it is a tremendous learning tool, especially for those of us who are new to the Boy Scout program.

Our troop (369, just outside of Philadelphia) does NOT have any type of new parent orientation program (which is an awesome idea by the way).

Is there any way that you might agree to post the Powerpoint presentation that you mentioned in this podcast? If not, would you mind e-mailing me a copy?

I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks, and keep up the great work!

Yours in Scouting,

Patrick Fergione

Jerry,

I have heard that National is coming out with a whole new set of adult training courses, especially in aquatics. These will be much longer than the current safe swim defense and safety afload. No one in my council has seen the syllabus, but it sounds like the BSA Lifeguard course (which I took 4 years ago) is being split up. It means many more hours of training (and course fees, how do you handle those?) for adult scouters.

And now, in my council, the implied message is that my woodbadge (for the 20th century, lol) is no long valid, and that I must take the 21st century course to be a REAL woodbadge recipient. A bit unfair, I think. Why don't they come up with a woodbadge refresher course for prior course recipients?

One good thing about training: you get aquainted with the BSA books you have not seen and of course need. The recommended reading list was invaluable. It made me realize we need to update the troop library.

Thanks for the show.

Uniforms and summer camp. Two things near and dear to a scoutmaster's heart.

I am looking forward to seeing the new uniforms. Maybe the boys will enjoy wearing the new ones more then the existing uniform.

And as for summer camp... I bet you could do three, four, or more shows just on stories from camp. I know I could.

Hi Jerry, another interesting show.

It's funny that you talk about change in this show. My Assistant Scout Leader and I were talking about the old badge scheme we did when we were kids and 'how much better it was'. After discussing the various merits of the old and new, I said that in 20 years time, the then leaders will be saying how much better things were in 2008! It's like you say, that's the way the Scouts (BSA, SA, whoever) want things done, so we do it. As long as it's fun for the kids. Change and new stuff are good, it keeps Scouting fresh. Only change for changes sake isn't.

Our uniform changed about 7 years ago and it too was designed to be more 'user friendly' on activities. I don't remember the kind of debate that the BSA are having happening and our uniform change was well accepted. Mind you, there hadn't been a significant change since the late 1960s / early 1970s. It was long overdue!

Thanks for the mention in the last show. I'm honoured to be thought of as your buddy!

Keep up the good work

Nick
That is an interesting outlook in the cultural aspect. I think because Scouting teaches the reponsible operation of firearms it would be hypocritical of them to then allow games that would require scouts to point firearms at each other.

Interesting thoughts on guns there Jerry.
It sounds like the rules regarding guns and the like are fairly similar between the SA and BSA. Although we can go and play laser tag, we can't do paint balling.
If using air weapons or actual firearms, they must be properly supervised and on a proper range or shooting area. The instructors must be properly qualified to the relevant standards laid out by the SA. Also we cannot shoot at targets which resemble an animal or person.

I agree with the current set up in the UK, with maybe the exception of paint balling. I guess the use of guns of all types comes down to the local culture. In my eyes (please correct me if I'm wrong), guns are seen as a more 'normal' thing in society in the US, than in the UK.
I must admit, seeing Police wearing guns in both the US and Canada when I have visited, did scare me. But that's because that is not the case here and I see it as unusual.

I'm all for letting Scouts shoot in properly supervised conditions as this teaches them to treat a firearm with respect.
In my Scouting career I've shot air pistols, air rifles, rifles and done archery and it was good fun, although I have the utmost respect for these weapons!

Perhaps the issue is not about what the scouts can shoot and where, but the availability of the weapons. But that's another story!

Keep up the good work with the fascinating podcasts.

Excelent Podcast, They keep getting better and better. Great topic, I'm going to burn this to a few CD's and pass them out at a troop meeting and mention the site at our roundtable. Yes it sounded scripted but it was very well covered. Not only does it help identify bullying but also suggest how to deal with it.

Keeping the boys busy is great advice. A wise old scouter gave me some advise and said to keep a box handy with puzzles (cross word, wooden, and metal - like the bent nails). Keeps the idle mind busy.

Good show Jerry! I had the opportunity to take a course on this subject taught by the guys from Troop 299 in Blue Ash (Cincinnati) Ohio at my council's University of Scouting in January 2007.

They have the pdf handout and powerpoint presentation for that class online:
